Movers/MovingAdvice

MOVING ADVICE

  1. Movers will not move paint cans. Only leave paint that are less than 2 years old. Have your painter remove older cans to a special disposal place.
  2. Movers will not move cleaning supplies, especially aerosol cans.
  3. Movers will not move plants unless bagged.
  4. The moving company is not as important as the individual driver and his crew.
  5. Be sure the movers take extra boxes with them and that they clear out crawl spaces or you may have to pay extra at closing to fulfill "broom swept clean" clause in the sales contract.
  6. Movers usually arrive 1 plus hours late. If you plan to move out on the day of closing, you are going to have to be in too many places at the same time. You can sign papers ahead of time for the "sell" closing but you have to be at the "buy" closing.
  7. Movers have to wait until all the paperwork has been completed at the closing before they can move in.
  8. Try to schedule the movers to pack the truck the day before you move. Most movers will hold overnight for you for about $140-$200. It is worth it. They can leave mattresses if you should desire to sleep in the old house instead of a hotel. The next day, you can clean or have cleaners come to the old house.
  9. If you are lucky enough to have an extra day before you move in, you can get the shelves lined and the kitchen put together before the furniture comes in.
  10. Remember "last out first": telephone, cleaning supplies, shelf-paper, kitchen items and kid's favorite toys should be put in last or put in the car. All paper work and business file, especially proof of a fully paid insurance policy on the new house and your driver's license must be with you at the closing.
  11. Don't forget to take the garage door openers out of your car and collect all the keys from anybody you gave them to.

UTILITIES ( Click " Utilities to Call "for the numbers)

1. At least 2 weeks ahead of time be sure to change all utilities in to (and out of )your name  starting the day of closing.  There will be an extra charge if the gas compnay has to shut off the gas and the heat must be on in the winter or there could be frozen pipes.

2. If the house is going to be vacant in the winter the pipes could freeze so the water should be drained from all the pipes by a professional plumber.

3. ***** Be sure to have your water read (must be done from the inside of the house in Lincolnshire) 5 days before closing.  Then call the water department and pay the bill at city hall.  The buyers cannot buy the stamps necessary to close if the water bill has not been paid.

4. Thank God for cell phones because it often takes the phone company and cable a couple of weeks to get started!!  Be sure to put a forwarding number on your phone.

5. MAIL:   Be sure to notify the post office of change of address.  It will only work for 6 months so put on your calendar every 6 monts to renew it or you will loose old friends!!!!

6. Moving long distance?  Be sure to pick up all xrays and medical files that you will need   for new doctors and don't forget to get any school records.......and the contents of any safety deposit boxes.
